Juanita Baró, a life devoted to art

Cuban-born dancer, choreographer and actress Juanita Baró never intended to be a painter. A larger portion of her career was devoted to the art of dance, notably as a part of the world renowned Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba, with which she worked as a dancer, singer and choreographer, developed as a performing artist, and toured extensively throughout the world for nearly 13 years. At the time, she only strayed from dance for stints in the movie industry, teaching and the stage. After leaving for the United States in 1980, Ms. Baró went on to found her own Cuban folkloric dance troupe, and worked for television projects as well as in films. Her work with Teatro Avante and the Hispanic Theater Festival in Miami saw her mature further as a stage actress during the 90’s. She also taught dance as an adjunct professor in Florida International University during those years. But it was not until the year 2000 that she realized her own potential as a painter. Beginning that year, she began experimenting with water color and oil techniques, settling in the end for acrylics and canvas as her preferred means of expression. Ms. Baró has already been a participant in collective expositions in Tampa and Fort Myers. The series of paintings Peces and Pavorreal, among others, are the central part of her work, now just ready to be individually presented to the public. Contact info: manuelballagas@gmail.com

These are some samples of her work, from her growing gallery:

'Peces 4', acrylic con canvas, 18" x 24"
'Peces 13', acrylic on canvas, 18" x 24"

'Pavorreal 1', acrylic on canvas, 24" x 36"

  4. Preciosos!

Muchas gracias
